HOUSEBOAT HOLIDAYS IN THE BACKWATERS
Alappuzha - Alappuzha is a district of immense
natural beauty situated on the Arabian Sea on the West
and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and fresh water
rivers crisscrossing it. Alappuzha, referred as the
Venice of East by the travelers from across the world,
has enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of
Kerala.
Kottayam - Adjacent to Alappuzha
district is the Kottayam district famous for panoramic
backwater stretches lush paddy fields. It is also connected
to Alappuzha through backwaters also and trips are arranged
to that effect. Kottayam is the ideal take-off point
for visits to Munnar, Thekkady, Ernakulum in Kerala.
Kumarakom - Situated on the
backwater canal network and linked to Alleppy (Alapphuza)
and Kottayam, Kumarakom, a small village is situated
12 kms west of Kottayam town. It has a beautiful bird
sanctuary on the banks of the Vembanad Lake and is an
ideal place for backwater cruises. The bird sanctuary
is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like Siberian
stork, Egret darter, Heron and Teal.
There are also different varieties of local birds like
waterfowl, wild duck, cuckoo, owl, water duck etc. The
best months for bird watching are between June and August.
Close to this sanctuary is Coconut Lagoon Heritage Resort
which is a marvelous holiday destination where tourists
are accommodated in genuine traditional wooden cottages.
One can enjoy experiencing the unique culture of Kerala.
Ernakulum - Most of the times
confused with Kochi or Cochin, Ernakulum is a district
of Kerala famous for back water cruise. It is connected
to Alleppey by the back water canals to Kochi/Cochin
which is a natural harbour in the Ernakulum district.
