THE PUSHKAR FAIR
Pushkar is a small town in the state of Rajasthan about
11kms North West of Ajmer. This town is transformed
into a spectacular fair ground for twelve days during
the month of October- November. This event becomes a
cultural phenomenon where one can find colourfully dressed
locales, musicians, traders in livestock, comedians,
sadhus - all at one place and thus becomes the right
place to witness the culture of the state of Rajasthan.
As this fair started with trade in camels it is also
known as Pushkar Camel Fair. The camel and cattle trading
is in its peak during the first half of the festival
period.
This fair has religious importance too. Pushkar has
the only temple of Lord Brahma. Thus sadhus and the
devotees come to the fair in the later half of the fair
as religious activities dominate during that time. Devotees
take dip into the holy lake in Pushkar. It is believed
that the sacred water of the lake bestows salvation.
Apart from it folk dances of Rajasthan are also held
in the evenings along with the folk songs which are
enjoyed by all. Arts and crafts exhibition are also
held where crafts persons and artisans from all over
the state and adjoining states participate.
