YOGA & MEDITATION IN PONDICHERRY
- PAGE 1
Pondicherry or Pondy, as it is fondly called is
a unique place in the tourism map of India. This is
because of the blend of spiritual aura, French colonial
heritage mixed with Tamil culture and the cosmopolitan
flair of many nationalities in this small town at the
seaside. Pondicherry is famous in the world for its
French colonial heritage and the famous Sri Aurobindo
Ashram. The colonial buidings here dates back to the
18th centuary. There are two parts of the town. The
oldest part of the town flanks the seashore boulevard
and has the French Colonial buildings, straight clean
streets, private homes with cool courtyards sorrounded
by walls and also the sprawling Sri Aurobindo Ashram.
The parallel other part of the town has the colonies
having Tamil influence.
The quite and peaceful beaches with
beach resorts and the blend of spiritualism has made
Pondicherry a place of prime attraction to the tourists.
The ambience created by this can not be experienced
anywhere else.
This is not the only place of interest
in Pondicherry as it has its own special attractions
to offer. Pondicherry can be centred to take a visit
to the holy temple towns of Kanchipuram, Thiruvannamalai
and Chidambaram, the heritage sculptures and magnificent
rock temples of Mamallapuram. Auroville, the international
city of Unity is situated in the outskirts of the Pody
town and its worth experiencing.
Yoga and meditation at Aurobindo
Ashram in Pondicherry
Pondicherry is a famous as the seat of Yoga and Meditation
as Rishi Aurobindo established his Ashram here in 1926.
There is a slight difference in the approach of Yoga
propounded by Rishi Aurobindo here in Pondicherry. It
is not a one way traffic as its aim is not only to rise
out of the ordinary consciousness into the divine consciousness,
but to bring that divine consciousness down to the ignorance
of mind, life and body to manifest the divine here.
Thus there is marked difference between the Ashram that
grew here and the other Ashrams.
